2003 W.C. Handy Blues Awards Weekend
(Feature Article)

Named for the "Father of the Blues," The W.C. Handy Blues Awards are produced by Year of the Blues partner the Blues Foundation, a Memphis-based non-profit organization established to "Preserve, Celebrate and Support" the blues. The awards honor blues artists' accomplishments over the past twelve months as individual performers and as recording artists. The awards ceremony is the traditional opener to Handy Weekend, a series of events designed to appeal to blues musicians, industry, and fans.

The W.C. Handy Blues Awards ceremony and concert was held May 22nd, 2003 in Memphis, TN, at the Orpheum Theater adjacent to world-famous Beale Street, "the Home of the Blues," where Handy wrote the first published blues song. Each year the ceremony is videotaped and later shown on public television where it reaches an audience of over three million.
